What is it like to become an adult?

Here’s an objective statement: nobody necessarily turns into an adult at the age of 18. Adulthood is not disillusionment, it is creating your own story to live by, your own reality. Adulthood is not a dependence on blame or conditioning, but responsibility for what you do with the moment in hand and ahead.
What remains confusing is that there is no rite of passage. Some of us become adults when we reach college. Some of us when we get our first jobs. Some, upon our first heartbreak. Others at a funeral. Someone once told me that you aren’t quite an adult until you’ve kids of your own.
Anyhow, societies have their norms, thresholds, expectations, and rites of passage.

This story about turning 18 while in prison, touched my heart.
